Dr. Linda Johnston is a Clinical Psychologist, registered to practice in Ontario with the College of Psychologists, with over twenty-five years experience providing psychotherapy and counseling to individuals, couples, and people in relationships as well as teaching and training psychologists on the supervised practice register. Feedback from former clients indicates that Dr. Johnston is seen to be warm and compassionate, intensely caring, and very skilled at helping the client create the changes that significantly improve their lives. She is committed to using research-based proven methods to provide psychotherapy and counseling and actively keeps herself up-to-date with information and methodologies.

Dr. Johnston has worked in private practice for over twenty-five years treating young adults, adults, couples, and relationships with clients from age 16 years to their mid-eighties. She believes intensely in change at any stage of life. She has extensive experience, both utilizing and teaching, a number of modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, systemic psychotherapy, Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Mowrer’s Integrity Therapy. She is currently actively working on new modalities for the treatment of various forms of anxiety, is using and further developing a particular new model for depression, and is fine-tuning and integrating the details of an intimacy model in her work with couples. Due to her background in her first career, she also has a particular interest and involvement in work-related challenges and difficulties.

In her first career, Dr. Johnston gained many years experience in the business/corporate world in the Information Technology field. Her last position in that field was Director of IT at the Conference Board of Canada, on the senior executive, reporting to the President. Due to her part-time involvement in her Ph.D. in Psychology during those years, she was very much involved in the work of the Human Resources departments of her last two corporate positions at both Combustion Engineering Canada and The Conference Board of Canada. She has first-hand experience with the complexity, the politics, the need for a good fit between employees and corporations and the need for a balance between productivity and the needs of the corporation and the need for work/life balance for employees.

The choice to make a significant career change was pivotal and positive for Dr. Johnston. She considers herself very fortunate to have moved into an occupation she so thoroughly enjoys. She obtained her Ph.D. in psychology from Carleton University, specializing in clinical psychology, in 1991. Dr. Johnston now has 30 years experience as a psychotherapist and clinical psychologist and 22 years experience supervising new psychologists finalizing their registration as psychologists through the College of Psychologists of Ontario. She is pleased to be able to go to work every day looking forward to what new problem or challenge may appear in her clients. She considers it a blessing to be able to enjoy her job and to simultaneously help create positive change in people’s lives. She works collaboratively with her colleagues in her practice, with the physicians who refer to her practice, both family practitioners and specialists, with the corporate clients who refer clients to the practice and to the many individuals who self-refer to her practice. She is confident that your first contact with the practice, usually with Jocelyne or Mary, our two part-time office managers, will be a positive experience and that you will be assisted in finding a good match with a psychologist who will help you meet your needs.

The Psychotherapy Process

Our focus is to first establish goals to address your problem, working with you to clearly set out what needs change or improvement. We then use our knowledge and experience with a number of psychotherapy modalities (eg CBT and others) to determine which methods we should use based on what best suits you and the problem you are dealing with.

You will find we work in an empathetic and respectful manner to ensure we are engaged with you and you are secure and comfortable as we work together to create the change you require. We ensure the confidentiality of your sessions and your personal information. And if you already have professionals working with you, we have experience being part of your healthcare (or other) team to help you achieve a total solution to your goal.
